Wildfire Prevention - Twice Upon a Time

Since 1944, Smokey Bear has been the symbol of the protection of America's forests. More than 60 years later, he is still wearing his blue jeans, but his trademark line has received an update. It's now: "Only You Can Prevent Wildfires. "And for good reason- the destruction of land by fire has expanded beyond just the forest. "Wildfire" refers to any uncontrolled, outdoor fire. The year 2000 marked one of the greatest acreage losses to wildfire since 1957. Eight million acres burned that year (about the size of New Hampshire), and of that more than 3 million acres were lost due to fires caused by humans. For more information visit www.smokeybear.com. Young Farmer Running a Peterson Sawmill

Footage of the WINNER of the 2007 Young Farmer Contest, Callum Thomsen running a Peterson Portable Sawmill. On July 6th in Rotorua New Zealand, seven of NZ's top young farmers competed for the coveted title of Young Farmer of the Year and prizes worth over $75,000! Peterson Portable Sawmills donated a Winch Production Frame sawmill to be used in the Forestry module of the Grand Final. There were seven modules in all, including irrigation, sheep shearing and tractor driving. In the forestry section, the finalist had to use an excavator to grapple a log off a logging truck trailer and onto the ground, they then had to put a chain on a chainsaw and cut the log in half. Getting back into the excavator they manoeuvred one half of the log over to the skids in place under the 27hp Kohler Peterson WPF and set to work milling the log. These guys only had a few minutes training and were taught basic safety aspects of the mill before they had to get in there and operate it. Being used to machinery and equipment, the seven finalists had no problems running the mill, which just goes to show how easy Peterson mills are to use. None of the finalists had ever used a sawmill before. Produced by PetersonSawmills. Brought to you by SafetyTV Library, www.safetyissues.com. Life Has No Reset Button, Think Safety.

Highway Safety - Luxury Car Bumpers

.... Why bumpers don't bump: The purpose of a bumper is to absorb the energy of a low-speed collision before it damages expensive-to-repair parts like fenders and hoods. But there are multiple problems, the first of which is that the bumpers on colliding vehicles often don't line up vertically so they don't engage to begin with. Even some that do line up don't stay engaged during an impact. Their aerodynamic styling may allow them to slide under the bumpers of the vehicles they strike. This means they can't do the job of energy absorption....

Energy Saving Glass

"An invisible interlayer film is creating visible effects. This material is conducive to safety, because if it receives an impact, it only cracks in a cobweb pattern. It cuts ultraviolet radiation by over 99% and features multi-functionality that enhances the in-car environment further.

S-LEC SSF (Sound and Solar Film) from Sekisui Chemical provides outstanding sound insulation. It also controls vibration, reducing the 100-500 Hz frequencies from the engine by two-thirds compared with conventional interlayer films.

S-LEC SSF, created using Sekisui's unique multilayer technology, contains a plastic layer, which is highly sound-insulating, between the polyvinyl butyral (PVB) layers.

S-LEC SSF effectively reduces penetration by heat radiation in the mid-infrared range. Compared with ordinary windshield glass, it reduces the temperature of the steering wheel, which in summer sometimes gets too hot to touch, by about 10 degrees Celsius.

Ordinary heat-reflecting glass also reflects radio waves, obstructing mobile phone communication. By contrast, S-LEC SSF cuts heat radiation without obstructing radio waves.

By reducing the temperature inside the car, this film reduces the load on the car's air-conditioner, keeping gasoline bills down, and also helps to reduce CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions. MRI Safety - New Guidelines

Serious and sometimes fatal patient injuries associated with magnetic resonance procedures are an ongoing safety concern. These issues can include burns from electrodes and cables during MRI exams, injuries in patients who have implanted neurological stimulators, burns in patients wearing transdermal patches, and about metallic objects brought into the MR unit that have flown across the room and killed people. MR-associated accidents, many life-threatening or fatal, are still occurring, and this has caused continued concern in the radiology community. In order to help reduce the risk, the American College of Radiology (ACR) has issued a comprehensive update to its 2004 white paper on MR safety, called the ACR Guidance Document for Safe MR Practices. This document covers every aspect of MR safety, from the design of the MR suite and the qualifications of personnel to screening patients and what to do in an emergency. Personnel who work in or near a magnetic resonance facility should have and read this document. But it also contains information that may be useful for non-radiology personnel who prepare patients for MR procedures -- for example, on managing the potential risks of aneurysm clips, pacemakers, dermal drug delivery patches and gadolinium-based contrast agents. Car Seat Safety

Motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death among children 0-12 years of age in the U.S. (CDC 2005). * Each year thousands of young children are killed or injured in car crashes. You can help prevent this from happening to your child by always using car safety seats and seat belts correctly. (AAP 2006) * Car safety seats have been shown to be highly effective in reducing death and injury due to motor vehicle crashes. Car safety seats are 71% effective in reducing deaths for infants and 54% effective in reducing deaths for children ages 1 to 4 years. Belt-positioning booster seats reduce the risk of injury by 59% for children ages 4 through 8 years. Clearly, restraining infants and children in the proper car safety seat does help keep them safe. (NHTSA 2005) * In the United States during 2004, 1,638 children ages 14 years and younger died as occupants in motor vehicle crashes, and approximately 214,000 were injured. That’s an average of 5 deaths and 586 injuries each day (NHTSA 2005a). * Of the children ages 0 to 14 years who were killed in motor vehicle crashes during 2004, half were unrestrained (NHTSA 2005a). * One study showed that children ages 2-5 yrs who are moved to seat belts too early have 4 times the risk of a head injury in a crash. * Children ages 4 through 7 are generally too small for adult seat belts and need a BOOSTER SEAT to ensure the seat belt will fit securely across their chests and low across the upper thights - to help prevent internal injuries, neck, head and spinal injuries, and even ejection and death in the event of a crash. * One out of four of all occupant deaths among children ages 0 to 14 years involve a drinking driver. More than two-thirds of these fatally injured children were riding with a drinking driver (Shults 2004). * Restraint use among young children often depends upon the driver’s restraint use. Almost 40% of children riding with unbelted drivers were themselves unrestrained (Cody 2002). * Many children who ride in child safety seats are improperly secured. A survey of more than 17,500 children found that only 15% of children in safety seats were correctly harnessed into correctly installed seats (Taft 1999). Produced by Unknown. Teen Drivers and Parents

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, automobile crashes are the leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 20. And the summer months are the deadliest for teen drivers. So, what’s a parent to do? The best way for parents to teach kids how to drive safely is to ride with them and teach them by example. Some states even require an adult to spend fifty hours riding with the teenager before they are ever allowed to drive on their own. Other state laws that set good guidelines for safe driving include limiting the number of passengers a young driver can have in their vehicle, restricting night driving and, of course, always wearing a seat belt. Parents and guardians can also reduce their teens’ crash risk by making sure they are driving a well-maintained vehicle. If you’d like help setting up driving guidelines with your teen driver, check out the safety section of gm.com, for a downloadable copy of the booklet “Teen Driver – A Family Guide to Teen Driver Safety. Tire Safety

Check Tire Tread Depth for Grip and Replace Worn Tires to Avoid Accidents: If you place a penny with the top of the head facing down into your tires' shallowest groove and you can see the top of Abraham Lincoln's head, the tire's grip is not sufficient and is unsafe. Always remember that if you only replace two tires at a time, mount the new tires on the rear axle to avoid losing traction in the rain, which can cause spin outs and increase the potential for accidents.

Mini Strobe Unit

LEDtronics® introduces the new Mini-Strobe a personal safety device that provides reliable, affordable and portable protection in low-light work or recreational environments by making the operator easier to see. This compact device continuously emits a bright flashing light that can be seen up to five miles, depending on weather conditions and line-of-sight. The Mini-Strobe flashes 50 -- 70 times per minute for 72 continuous hours on a fresh D-cell alkaline battery. The domed lens projects the strobe's light and safeguards the Xenon lamp from impact. The Xenon lamp operates for more than 200 hours (8 days) before requiring replacement. With four different colored (clear, amber, blue and green) lenses included, Mini-Strobe can be configured to meet a range of uses and personal preferences. Measuring 4-1/8"L x 2"W and weighing 6.4 oz, Mini-Strobe can be conveniently stored in toolboxes, lockers, car trunks, backpacks and road emergency kits. Additionally, Mini-Strobe features a stainless steel safety pin that makes it easy to attach the strobe to life jackets, safety vests, camping/hiking gear and tool belts.

It heightens the visibility of nighttime road construction crews, traffic-control personnel, emergency response teams, parking attendants, etc., who are three times more likely to be injured by a motor vehicle than their daytime counterparts. Mini-Strobe is ideal for daylight uses, too, such as hunting, hiking, boating and camping -- any activity where being prepared for the unexpected is the rule and not the exception. The Mini-Strobe is the ideal safety accessory to have in case of unexpected bad weather, heavy fog or dense smoke. Mini-Strobe is made of high-impact ABS plastic and features a metal switch that can withstand the stress of frequent use. It is water-resistant up to a depth of three feet and meets U.S. Coast Guard performance standards.

Occupational Safety and Health Awareness

Alice Hamilton, M.D., was "the first American physician to devote her life to the practice of industrial medicine." Born into a prominent family of Fort Wayne, Indiana, she graduated from medical school at the University of Michigan in 1893. She later moved into Jane Addams' Hull House, and there provided a well-baby clinic for residents of the settlement's neighborhood. Seeing the problems of poor working class families at close range, her compassion and professional interest were inexorably drawn to the many victims of work-related diseases and injuries. She pioneered occupational epidemiology and industrial hygiene in the United States beginning with investigations of lead poisoning among enamelers of bathtubs. Her findings were so scientifically persuasive, that they caused sweeping reforms, both voluntary and regulatory, to reduce occupational exposure to lead. In 1919, Dr. Hamilton was appointed assistant professor of industrial medicine at Harvard Medical School, becoming the first woman on the faculty of Harvard University. Boating Safety Tips

Warmer weather means more people enjoying the sun on their boats. However, boating is serious business - and there are precautions you should take to protect yourself, your passengers and your boat. The Coast Guard Auxiliary offers boating courses which teach the rules of the water and how to safely operate your boat, including risks to avoid when on the water. There may be insurance discounts available after completing the training as well. It is also essential to have all necessary safety equipment on board - including flares, a ship-to-shore radio, fire extinguishers and life vests for everyone on board — even your pets. Protecting your boat doesn't stop when you're out of the water. Most boat thefts occur on land - even in front of your home. Take a wheel off of the trailer and use a hitch lock to secure your boat. Also make sure you have insurance so you are covered for theft – as well as bodily injury or property loss that may occur when operating the boat. Produced by Medialink. Teens and Gun Crime

Gun violence poses a serious threat to America's young people. A teenager in this country is more likely to die from a gunshot wound than from all natural causes of death combined. Even though we have made progress in reducing violent crime in the United States, the rates of crimes committed with guns continues to be among the highest in the industrialized world The PSAs encourage youth to think about the repercussions of gun crimes and reminds them that the consequences, death or jail time, just as seriously affect their families. Caution on Neuropsychiatric Events with Tamiflu

Roche Laboratories has alerted healthcare professionals about neuropsychiatric events that have occurred in influenza patients taking Tamiflu (oseltamivir phosphate). Tamiflu is used to treat or prevent the flu in patients 1 year and older. The company's letter says that there have been reports of self-injury and delirium in flu patients who were taking Tamiflu. Most of these events occurred in Japan, and the majority were in children. The possible role of the drug in contributing to these events isn't known. However, the labeling for Tamiflu now says that people with the flu, particularly children, may be at increased risk of self-injury and confusion shortly after taking Tamiflu, and so they should be closely monitored for signs of unusual behavior throughout the treatment period. Caregivers or patients should be told to contact a healthcare professional immediately if a patient taking Tamiflu shows any signs of unusual behavior. The company's letter also alerts practitioners to the potential interaction between Tamiflu and FluMist, the intranasal flu vaccine. It notes that if they are given together, Tamiflu may inhibit the desired replication of the live virus in the intranasal vaccine. Because of this, FluMist should not be administered within two weeks before, or 48 hours after administering Tamiflu. This potential interaction is not a problem with the injectable trivalent flu vaccine. FDA Patient Safety News: January 2007. Brought to you by SafetyTV Library, www.safetyissues.com. Patient Safety - Capillary Leaks

Genentech is alerting healthcare professionals about two new safety issues for Avastin (bevacizumab) a drug used to treat certain colorectal and lung cancers. The first is a rare brain-capillary leak problem called reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome (RPLS). RPLS is a neurological disorder associated with hypertension, fluid retention and the cytotoxic effects of immunosuppressive drugs on the vascular endothelium. The onset of symptoms can occur from 16 hours to 1 year after starting Avastin treatment. These symptoms can include headache, seizures, visual disturbances and altered mental function with or without hypertension. The second safety issue concerns patients on Avastin who have experienced perforation of the nasal septum. Seven cases of this adverse event have been reported since the drug was marketed. Patient Safety - Cardiovascular Risk

FDA is warning health care professionals that patients treated with erythropoietic agents may have an increased risk of cardiovascular complications if the dosing recommendations in the labeling are exceeded. These agents are used to stimulate the production of red blood cells in patients with severe anemia, and they are sold under the brand names Procrit, Epogen and Aranesp. FDA's advisory follows a recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine. In this study, anemic patients with chronic kidney disease were randomized to be dosed with Procrit to either a higher average target hemoglobin level (13.5 g/dL) or a lower level (11.3 g/dL). The patients being treated to the higher level experienced more cardiovascular complications than those being treated to the lower level. These complications included myocardial infarction, hospitalization for congestive heart failure, stroke and death. FDA also suggests talking to your patients about the importance of keeping appointments for simple blood tests to monitor hemoglobin levels. Advise them to call if they experience increased shortness of breath, pain, leg swelling or blood pressure while they're on the drug. FDA Patient Safety News: January 2007. Avoiding Burns during ECG and MRI Exams

A recent FDA article in Nursing2006 describes second and third degree burns in patients undergoing MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) exams while they were wearing ECG electrodes and cables. Many of these burns were discovered only after the exam was over and some were severe enough to require plastic surgery. The problem is that the radiofrequency fields created during an MRI exam can heat ECG cables and electrodes, seriously burning the underlying skin. This hazard is likely to increase as the number of MRI exams goes up, and as more patients need ECG monitoring during their MRI procedures... FDA Patient Safety News: February 2007. Woman and Silicone Implants

Patients may be asking about FDA's recent decision to approve the marketing of certain silicone gel-filled breast implants. They may want to know more about the safety of these devices, and they may need guidance in deciding whether or not to have them. The approved implants are made by two companies, Allergan and Mentor. They're approved for breast reconstruction in women of all ages, and for breast augmentation in women 22 and older. FDA is requiring that the companies continue to study the safety of the implants for about 10 more years after they are marketed. Each company will study about 40,000 women, and this can give more information about possible rare adverse effects. A report by the Institute of Medicine several years ago concluded that there was no convincing scientific evidence that women with the implants are at greater risk for systemic problems like increased risk of neurological disorders, connective tissue diseases and cancer, and other studies have borne that out. But this question will continue to be addressed in the long-term studies that will be conducted by the companies. FDA Patient Safety News: January 2007. Patient Safety - Report Adverse Events

FDA's Medwatch program allows health care professionals and consumers to report to the FDA serious problems with the medical products they prescribe, dispense, or use. These reports, along with follow-up investigations, can help to identify important safety concerns. Take the example of the antibiotic Zyvox. Within the first six months of Zyvox's marketing, FDA began getting MedWatch reports of myelosupression from clinicians who suspected that the drug might be responsible. After investigating the problem, we worked with the manufacturer to change the Zyvox labeling to warn about the potential for myelosuppression. Sometimes MedWatch reports highlight errors in prescribing or administering medications. For example, FDA received reports of patient injuries due to name confusion between LANOXIN, a heart medication, and what used to be called LEVOXINE, a thyroid medication. As a result, FDA asked the manufacturer to change the name of Levoxine, and now it's known as LEVOXYL, which is less likely to be confused with LANOXIN. The MedWatch system can also help detect problems with medical products other than drugs. For example, FDA received two reports of pneumococcal eye infections in patients who'd received corneal transplants. An FDA inspection identified numerous manufacturing problems, which led the company to recall the implants. Of course, MedWatch reports by themselves can not usually establish a causal relationship between an adverse event and a medical product - it may take a formal epidemiologic study to do that. Still, MedWatch reports are vital in making sure that medical products are safe, because they provide a rapid signal to FDA that problems may be occurring...FDA Patient Safety News: February 2007.
